Woo Do Hoo

Today we went to get a Christmas tree. Katrina was thrilled with this event. She kept saying throughout the proceedings, "Woo Do Hoo." (her version of yippee)

My uncle has quite a few trees on his land and offered us a tree this year so we took my sister-in-law along with us and got a tree.

Katrina helped Panchito cut the tree down.

She stood proudly next to the tree waiting for it to be loaded into the van.

At first we waited outside while Panchito and my uncle loaded up the trees.

Then it got too cold to keep waiting outside so we got into the van.

Because we had one vehicle and two trees, we put our tree in the back of the van and Leanne's tree on top.

This year Katrina did an EXCELLENT job of putting ornaments on the tree. (The only thing is that we know where all of hers are... on the bottom!)

We eventually figured out that if we wanted some ornaments on top, Panchito would have to lift her up. She wanted to put on each and every ornament herself with VERY little help.

I have a great memory of helping my dad putting the star on the top of the tree after we finished decorating it. It was quite nostalgic seeing Katrina help Panchito.

She reached as far as she could and almost had it on top, but Panchito had to help her out a bit.

Who can resist laying under a newly decorated tree and looking up at the lights?

Thanksgiving Tradition

Every Thanksgiving for as long as I can remember we have shared it with my grandma. I have a VERY close relationship with my grandma and this past summer she was moved into a nursing home. I have continued to see her often and bring Katrina to see her. I really hope that Katrina will remember my grandma because she is such a dear woman.

Well, I am thankful that yesterday we were able to share yet another Thanksgiving with Grandma. My mom picked her up at the nursing home in the afternoon and brought her to our house (we hosted Thanksgiving this year) for the later afternoon and evening. We had such a nice time together and I am so glad she could come.

Happy Thanksgiving, Grandma. I hope we can spend many more together.

Leftovers already

Leftovers already...

My mom is going to make the Thanksgiving turkey this year (like every year) but I wanted to have more leftovers than normal so I made my own turkey today! I have it done and I even made gravy. My first time making gravy that turned out! I am so thrilled.

So, I got the turkey off the bone and into bags and into the freezer. Hopefully some of these bags will last until after the baby comes. Knowing how much I love turkey and gravy and mashed potatoes or dumplings (that I make that same day) the bags might not last.

Preschool Pals Turkey Project

Katrina is involved in a little group called Preschool Pals. It meets once a week on Thursdays to "do" preschool. Today we met for a special event. We made t-shirts and then turkeys out of potatoes. The ideas were from a good friend, one of the other moms. Thank you, Kristy!

Here we are with our turkey. It is a SUPER fun activity, if you are up for something Thanksgiving related. Start with a turkey and toothpicks and use whatever you have lying around to decorate your turkey. We used mini marshmallows for the tail, onions for the wings, marshmallows for the eyes and craisins for the gobbler. We stuck some kale on the tale too!

If you try it, I would like to see the pictures!

NST

Today I had an appointment with the ob. I have continued to have appointments with both the ob and the specialist throughout the pregnancy, but today it was with the ob.

Last time I went he asked to start seeing me every two weeks. I was shocked I was already at that point of the pregnancy, but I agreed (can you disagree?). We also solidified the C-section date at the last appointment (January 26th 7:30 AM).

I came home and decided to get into the tubs of baby clothes to begin sorting out the things that would be appropriate for this little boy. I took out all of the gowns (I ABSOLUTELY adore gowns in the first month or so) since they were almost all white or yellow (I know white is a crazy color, but you can always oxy-clean them!) and onesies and even a couple pair of pajamas. I sorted them out because although when I put them all away they were perfectly cleaned it appeared as if stains came to the surface over time. I oxy-cleaned those with stains and washed them and they came right out. I sorted through the bottles, etc. and had everything in one tub.

Then, I got a phone call from my dear friend Christina asking me if December 9th was a good day for the baby buddies shower they were planning for me. I said yes and hung up the phone. I then had a mini panic attack.

Suddenly I became EXTREMELY frightened about this next phase of the pregnancy: the delivery and arrival of the baby. I started to say to myself, "What if something happens and I have the clothes all washed and ready and then the baby doesn't come home with us?" I was terrified.

Now, I must tell you, there is no medical reason right now for me to feel this way. I have heard nothing but good, positive news from both the ob and the specialist about the baby's health. I guess I simply fell back into that old pattern of thinking. I was finally feeling settled into this part of the pregnancy and now they are talking about the C-section date and a shower and...

I was working at my own pace preparing the clothes, etc. for the baby and now I felt out of control with these other things happening.

I began to trust them all to the Lord. "Lord, You have a perfect plan in all of this. You know what is going to happen and when the baby is going to be born and how the delivery will go and You love us perfectly and we have no reason to fear because we can rest in that love."

So, last night I got back to washing the unstained items and today I had my ob appointment.

I went in and they took my blood pressure like always and then the nurse said, we are going to hook you up to the NST. I asked what it was and she said, "Haven't you had this before?" I said no and she proceeded to lead me onto the table and hooked me up to two monitors, one for the baby's heart and one for mine (I think!). She found the baby's heartbeat and then gave me a little clicker and asked me to please click it every time I felt the baby move. She left and said she would be back in a few minutes.

As I laid there (with Katrina next to me, helping the baby move as she pressed on my belly) I began to feel panicky again. I began to pray immediately and asked the Lord to calm my anxious heart and to cover me with His love.

About five minutes later the doctor came in and explained that it was about 3 weeks too early to begin running "non-stress tests" on the baby, that we will start this weekly at 32 weeks.

"Non-stress test?" I screamed, in my head. I didn't know I had to have these. The doctor recognized my concern and said that ANYONE with a "high-risk" pregnancy has these done to monitor the baby's heartbeat, etc. to be sure he is getting enough blood through the placenta, etc.

It threw me into another near panic attack. He explained everything to me and said there is no need for concern. I will have the NST once/week beginning at 32 weeks because of the clotting disorder they discovered I have before this pregnancy began. It is a better way of ensuring that things continue to progress smoothly until the birth.

I am home now and more calm. I am still trying to process this whole thing. I have heard of women having non-stress tests and I am following several blogs where the ladies had them often and yet I never imagined myself in their shoes. I also never knew how stressful non-stress tests can be.

We have 10 weeks left of this pregnancy and I really want to enjoy these weeks. I don't want to spend those weeks preoccupied with how things are going to go at the end, how the delivery will turn out, if the baby will be ok, etc. Please pray that I will keep trusting the Lord with His perfect plan for our lives and this baby's life. Also pray that I will take advantage of the peace that only the Lord has to offer.

Fill up for less than $30

I am so thankful that I just filled the van up with an EMPTY tank for less than $30. It is really hard to believe. Not long ago it was $60+!

I'm Getting a Little Too Big...

I think I am getting a bit too big to be watching "Dancing with the Stars" with Katrina...

Last night as we were watching she asked me if I could dance like the ladies on the screen. I told her I could not because my belly was too big (she doesn't really need to know that I could NEVER dance like that no matter how small my belly may be!).

Then, she proceeded to pull me off the sofa and beg me to flip and turn and spin her like the men were. I guess I look more like the men, stronger and more able to throw the girls in the air in weird formations.

Being the risk-taking mom that I am, I did try to do the dance moves with her. Thankfully we don't have a video camera because I am pretty sure Panchito would have put the video up by now!

I want to be born again

Lately we have been talking a lot about birth and we have slowly been preparing some things for the upcoming arrival of Katrina's baby brother.

This morning Katrina and I were playing and she asked me who gave her her favorite blanket, the one she sleeps with and asks for when she is hurt or sad. I told her it came from a good friend of mine, Ruth, when she was born.

Then, out of the blue, I heard these words, "Mama, I want to be born again."

They took me by surprise. I stopped for a moment and prayed, "Lord, I know what she means and it is not what I wish she meant and yet this is the attitude I want her heart to have."

Katrina wanted to be "born again" so she could get all sorts of gifts and things. That is understandable coming from a two-year old.

Yet, our prayer for Katrina is that she will be BORN AGAIN. The BORN AGAIN the Bible speaks of, where she surrenders her life to Jesus and accepts His work on the cross. Lord, please let this attitude continue in her and when she is ready and understands, please let
her accept You and Your immense love for her by being BORN AGAIN.

A few funny things

When your kids are the age of Katrina, 2 1/2, sometimes they say the funniest things. Katrina has been saying some really funny things lately and I thought I would share some with you...

SCENE: Panchito and Katrina are playing with her stuffed kittens and they are talking about the colors of their noses.

PANCHITO: This one has a pink nose. And this one has a brown nose. Hey, your nose is just like this one, brown.

KATRINA: Papa, no! I don't have a brown nose. I have a white nose.

SCENE: While eating dinner this weekend Katrina started talking about her "mother."

KRISTINA: Who is your mother, Katrina?

KATRINA: Amber is my mother.

KRISTINA: Who is your mommy?

KATRINA: Nana.

KRISTINA: Who is your mama?

KATRINA: You are, Mama!

SCENE: Panchito and Katrina are reading Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?

PANCHITO: Elephant, elephant, what do you hear? I hear a LEOPARD (he pronounced it LAY-O-PARD because in Spanish leopard is LAY-O-PARDO).

KATRINA: Papa, it's not LAY-O-PARD, it's leopard.

Katrina is funny and she really makes us laugh sometimes.

Speaking of monkeys...

Last night Katrina found a large piece of paper that she wanted to color on. She started asking Panchito and me to get her "the dotters from Nana." Neither of us really had an idea of what she was referring to so we said, "Go get them." She immediately went upstairs to look for the dotters.

I was working on the computer and I heard some rumbling and tumbling upstairs but she was not making a sound. Eventually I said to Panchito, "You better go check on her."

Well, before he even got up off the sofa she had started down the steps.

"I have the dotters from Nana, Mama."

"OK, Katrina. Great."

Yeah, great, until you see where she got them ...

Any idea where I keep these?

This might give you a better idea.

She pushed one of our island stools over to the counter, got on the stool, got on the counter and got the "dotters." She then got down without any problems and came downstairs thinking it was totally fine that she did all this.

It was hard to not be impressed with her ingenuity. We are very thankful she did not fall and we are also going to go upstairs with her next time she is looking for something we don't know what she is referring to!

A Bit Busy

I just wanted to apologize quickly for not posting anything for over a week... I have been a bit busy with many things:

  • I have a very part-time job for two weeks where I am translating the state standardized test for 6 students in a nearly local school district and have been preparing, etc. and then wanting to spend all my other time with Katrina and Panchito.
  • Panchito started an English composition class on October 28th and I have been helping him with revisions and proofreading.
  • Panchito has to apply to UW-Platteville for some courses and UW-P is requiring a course description in ENGLISH for all of his Venezuelan university courses. I was working on all the translations. 47 engineering classes to translate was a BIG undertaking.

Anyway, here are a few posts I have been meaning to post...

A Day in History for the Durán Family

Tuesday Panchito voted as an American citizen for the first time. It was quite a moment standing next to him in the voting booth, whispering back and forth about how to fill in the ballot.

Most of us take this privilege/right for granted. We didn't this year. Even though our candidate didn't win, we are thankful that we live in a country where the vote counts even if you vote for the "opposing" party. Venezuela is not that way.

Katrina got to vote too. They had a little voting booth for kids and she said, "Let's vote for John McCain, Mama."

Monkey See Monkey Do

Last week Panchito changed the oil in his car. Katrina enjoys working outside with her papa and insisted on changing the oil in her car as well. So, we rigged up a little ramp for her car and she drove up for her oil change.

I just had to post this because I got such a kick out of it! Doesn't it look funny?
